National Road
Understanding the importance of connecting the distant Mississippi frontier with the eastern United States, president Thomas Jefferson ordered a postal road be built between the Mississippi and Boone’s Wilderness Road which ended in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1801 the United States Army began improving the Trace and by 1809 it was fully navigable by wagon. Another national road was born.
