Walled City
Areas of Charleston along the Cooper River feature a different streetscape from the rest of the city. By the 1690’s this area of Charleston had grown into the fifth largest city in North America. Despite this fact, colonial Charleston still found itself in constant danger from hostile French and Spanish invaders, Native Americans and pirates. In self-defense, Charleston developed into a walled fortress city of businesses, townhouses, courtyards and narrow alleys.
