The Welland Ship Canal runs north and south and is located west of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. As part of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Canal connects Lake Ontario with Lake Erie and provides safe passage for Great Lake ships around Niagara Falls.

Lock 3 on the Canal is home to the Welland Canals Centre. The museum provides an interesting view of the history and engineering behind the Canal and locks. While in the lobby, be sure to check for scheduled ship arrivals. There is a free observation deck to watch ships navigate Lock 3 on their way through the St. Lawrence Seaway System. Even if you have to wait, it is well worth your time. It is amazing to watch these huge ships navigate the small locks with only inches to spare.
