Snoqualmie is located 25 miles east of Seattle, Washington in the Cascade Mountains. Geographically isolated by the mountains, in 1889 the railroad came to town and opened the area’s agricultural and timber resources to Puget Sound markets. The train also brought tourists to enjoy the beautiful sights and scenery. Now, as then, tourists marvel as waters cascade 268 feet over the granite cliffs of Snoqualmie Falls.
Long before the train, agriculture and logging operations, the Snoqualmie Valley was an integral part of the Snoqualmie People’s livelihood, culture, beliefs and spirituality. The Snoqualmie Falls served as their traditional burial site and a place where "prayers were carried up to the Creator by the great mists that rose during powerful flows". Even today one can see the prayers rising to the Creator from sacred rock cairns in the river below.
