Savannah, Georgia sits high on Yamacraw bluff overlooking the Savannah River not far from Georgia’s Atlantic coast. Founded, February 12, 1733, by General James Oglethorpe, Savannah was capital of the newly formed British 'Province of Georgia'. Later, as the last of the original thirteen colonies, colonial Georgia joined the United States and Savannah became Georgia's first state capital. As the years passed, Savannah transformed itself from a colonial settlement into a modern industrial center complete with Atlantic seaport and thriving tourist industry.
The transformation left its mark on Savannah and her people. Known for southern charm and hospitality, the people are tolerant but cautious of change. They are willing to listen, but have their opinions and make them known. Should negotiations fall to impasse, they are quick to act. Why, because it is 'the thing to do'. Some think Savannah has one foot in the present and the other trapped firmly in the past. Most outsiders don't understand, but do recognize Savannah is different in a
desirable way.
