Nightscapes are typically high contrast scenes often challenging even the best photographers. Caused by bright lights and dark shadows, these High Dynamic Range (HDR) situations may be addressed with one or combinations of several techniques.
One solution is to utilize the lighting dynamics as a compositional component of the photograph. This is often the best approach, but may not always be possible.
Another solution is to photograph during the first and last hours of sunlight. Also known as the Golden Hour, the light is softer and more defused. With the ambient light levels approaching those of the artificial lights, the dynamic range tends to remain within the capabilities of the imaging technology.
Another approach utilizes HDR Tonal mapping software. In this solution, a series of exposure bracketed images are processed to reveal highlight and shadow details in the resulting HDR image.
Another solution utilizes Exposure Fusion software. In this approach, a series of exposure bracketed images are merged into one with increased dynamic range.
No one technique works best in all situations. Each is capable of producing interesting results. The Nightscapes portfolio contains examples of each.
