Mississippi River

The Mississippi, second longest river in the United States, originates in northwestern Minnesota and flows 2,340 miles south to the Gulf of Mexico. Covering over 1,247,300 square miles, the Mississippi Watershed extends from the Appalachians to the Rocky Mountains. As the area was settled, the river grew into a major transportation and trading corridor.
