Mammoth Cave National Park is located in central Kentucky 85 miles south of Louisville. Established as a national park in 1941, it is best known as having the world’s most extensive cave system. With over 365 miles of surveyed passageways, it is estimated another 600 miles are yet to be discovered.
Despite the absence of woolly mammoths, the park does offer a variety of activities both above and below ground. The park’s 52,835 acres offer visitors opportunities in hiking, bicycling, boating, canoeing and camping. For those more venturous, the National Park Service offers several guided cave tours ranging in difficulty from easy to very difficult. Tours vary from one to six hours and are available year round. A light jacket and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
