De Saussure House

Located on 1 East Battery, this three story brick stucco mansion was built by Louis D. De Saussure between 1858 and 1861. As an auctioneer who sold everything from ships to slaves, De Saussure was quite a character. During the 34 hour shelling of Fort Sumter in 1861, history has him hosting rowdy, celebratory crowds on the roof and porches of his home. The house is currently divided into three residences.
